The Peel River Ferry a few hours before it closed for the 2022 season. In 2024, the ferry is officially shutting down shortly after midnight on Nov. 6, if conditions allow.

Fort McPherson's transportation lifeline to the main arteries of the NWT is shutting down at the end of the day Tuesday.

"The Peel River Ferry at KM 74 Dempster Highway # 8 is open and will be officially closed for the season at the end of the day," reads a Department of Transportation on Nov. 5. "The NWT Dempster Highway 8 is closed between Eagle Plains and Fort McPherson due to high winds, blowing snow and poor visibility. The remainder of the highway is open and in fair winter conditions. Please watch for dip on the North side of Rengleng River at kilometer 178.

"Please drive carefully, watch for slippery/Icy sections between km 85 to km 272.5, rough sections, and equipment at work," the advisory adds.

Weather permitting, the last trip from the south side of the Peel River will be at 12:45 a.m. Nov. 6.
