in Aklavik called in the Emergency Response and Crisis Negotiation teams to resolve a 12-hour standoff with an armed man barricaded within a residence.

A news release was published Sept. 16.

Police say they were called by a resident who told them they had been assaulted by another person. When police arrived at the suspect's home, police noticed the subject was armed and concluded the person was in the middle of a mental health crisis. The suspect then barricaded themselves in their home.

"Given the high-risk nature of this situation, officers from the Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiation Team attended the community of Aklavik to assist the detachment," said NT media relations officer Cst. Josh Seaward.

It took 12 hours but eventually the suspect allowed themselves to be arrested.

No charges have been laid but the matter remains under investigation. The individual has been taken for mental health assessment and treatment.
