Search called off for missing Ulukhaktok boater after three days

A three day extensive search for an overdue boater in Ulukhaktok has been called off without finding the individual.

announced the search for the missing individual, who has not been identified, had been suspended by the Joiint Rescue Coordination Centre on Oct. 1.

"On September 27th, 2024, Ulukhaktok were made aware that a resident of the community had failed to return from a boating trip in an 18-foot red Lund boat," said NT information officer Cst. Josh Seaward. "An Search Manager was immediately assigned to the matter. Ulukhaktok Search and Rescue had begun a search for the man.

"The Ulukhaktok would like to thank all of the volunteers and searchers who tirelessly contributed to the search efforts."

Efforts taken to find the missing man included two Canadian Coast Guard vessels, including one operated by the Coast Guard Auxiliary, a C-130 Hercules and a rotary wing aircraft, as well as much of the community searching the waters and grounds around the hamlet and Kiijivik camp.
