Tourism and Parks putting out call for workshop teachers

Open to anyone interested in teaching a wide variety of skills

Officials with GNWT Tourism and Parks are putting the call out to artists of all styles and disciplines who are interested in offering workshops showing their skills.

Seasonal tourism development officer Mary Ann Villeneuve said she has a budget to put on at least one workshop per week until Aug. 30.

"It is open to anyone that would like to do any interpretive programming," she said. "They can do yoga, rock painting, treasure hunt, scavenger hunt, fish fry, bannock-making, doughnut-making, hide tanning, Arctic sports, learn to jig, learn to drum dance, storytelling, live music, medicine walk and identify traditional plants and their uses.

"I will take applications all summer and work with the applicant to build their workshop or event."

Villeneuve added she is hoping to sponsor up to 10 of these workshops. Artists will be paid an honorarium for their efforts and all supplies needed for the workshop are covered.

Workshops will take place at Jak Park, the Western Arctic Regional Visitor Centre, Nataiinlaii Territorial Park or Happy Valley Camp Ground, depending on the needs of the artist putting on the event.

Registration to conduct a workshop is open to anyone interested, including visitors to the NWT.

"The registration is open to tourists and local residents of the Beaufort Delta region," Villeneuve said. "People travel from the communities and they can join in as well."
