Environment and Climate Change has issued a bear warning for the community of Tuktoyaktuk after a mother bear and her cubs were seen moving along the shoreline of the community.

"Officers are patrolling the area and signage is up," says the notice posted the the GNWT department's social media on July 10. "Never leave garbage, fuel or food outside SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½“ preventing bear encounters starts with not inviting them to town with attractants.
"Keep pets on leashes and kids close by when youSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™re out. Look out for signage about wildlife in the area. If the bear returns to town, consider staying indoors for a while."

A representative from ECC later reached out to NNSL and said after consultation with local staff, ECC believes the bears are there simply from seasonal migration. However, ECC advises against leaving any attractants out, such as garbage, food or even fuel.

ECC advises that anyone who encounters a bear to not turn and run, as this could make the bear see you as prey and give chase. Instead, back away slowly and try to stay downwind of the predator so it cannot see you.

"If youSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™re being charged, stalked, or attacked SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” stand your ground and be ready to fight," says the notice. "Make loud noises with whatever you have. When you fight back, try to hit sensitive areas SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½“ especially the face and nose.

"If you or your property is in danger, if you can, shoot to kill. Report it to ECC as soon as you can. "

Sightings of bears can be reported to the local ECC office by calling (867) 678-0289.
