The federal and territorial governments announced $194 million in infrastructure funding on Jan. 4, with two major projects in Rankin Inlet to benefit from it.

SAӰӴýISAӰӴým delighted to see the amount of funding thatSAӰӴýs announced for Rankin Inlet,SAӰӴý said Darren Flynn, senior administrative officer for the hamlet. SAӰӴýI think Rankin Inlet has benefitted fairly nicely on this latest announcement.SAӰӴý

The Kivalliq Seniors Long-Term Care Facility is receiving $25 million from the Government of Canada, with $34.4 million from the Nunavut government. Rankin InletSAӰӴýs wastewater treatment facility detailed design and construction is also receiving $18 million from the federal government and another $6 million from the GN.

In 2022, the Kivalliq capital was suffering under the weight of infrastructure needs, blocking its ability to expand housing and other developments. Before upgrades to the Johnston Cove lift station, the hamlet had development restrictions in certain parts of town. Those restrictions no longer exist, and work on a new wastewater treatment plant should help support growth in the community.

SAӰӴýISAӰӴým confident itSAӰӴýs moving in the right direction,SAӰӴý said Flynn about the infrastructure challenges in Rankin inlet.

Sanikiluaq, Grise Fiord and Arctic Bay also received funding for water treatment plant work.

SAӰӴýAs outlined in the Nunavut Drinking Water Strategy, building water treatment plants that are specific to the needs of our growing communities is essential,SAӰӴý stated David Joanasie, minister of Community and Government Services, in a news release accompanying the Jan. 4 announcement.

SAӰӴýThe design and construction of these facilities is not just about infrastructure, but about safeguarding public health and empowering our communities.SAӰӴý
