Behchoko confiscate $76,000 in 'illicit' cash

'Suspicious driving behaviour' led to a traffic stop and a $76,000 cash seizure by the Behchoko recently.

The vehicle in question had Alberta licence plates. 

"During the [Nov. 25] investigation, grounds were formed to believe that the vehicle was engaged in drug trafficking. The driver and sole occupant was arrested," the stated on Dec. 12.

Police say they found the $76,000 in cash during a 'cursory search' of the vehicle. It was reportedly hidden in a compartment. The vehicle was also seized. 

After obtaining a search warrant, a police dog was brought in to search the vehicle more thoroughly. Several cellphones and a small quantity of illicit prescription drugs were also found.

The say the recovered money is believed to be the proceeds of crime. 

Taimur Ahmed, 31, of Edmonton, has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
 
Ahmed was held to appear before a justice of the peace and subsequently released with a series of conditions, including that he must leave the Northwest Territories within 72 hours, report to a bail supervisor as directed and cannot possess more than one cellphone. He was also ordered not to possess any firearms or similar weapons.
 
This investigation remains ongoing with support from the Territorial Crime Reduction Unit, according to the .
