Police in Fort Liard have laid seven charges relating to impaired driving so far in October, "an unusually high number" in the community of close to 500 people.
One driver was responsible for three of these charges. This individual was caught three separate times over two weeks, each time providing breath samples in excess of twice the blood alcohol limit, according to the .
In one instance, the driver of an all-terrain vehicle struck a marked vehicle, the Mounties stated. The ATV was subsequently impounded and the person's driver's licence was seized. The accused, a 35-year-old man, is scheduled to attend court on Nov. 20 in Fort Liard.
Two of the impaired driving charges were laid during the national traffic safety initiative known as Operation Impact.
"As impaired driving remains a leading cause of criminal death in Canada, these numbers are disappointing to see," the stated in a news release issued on Oct. 30. "The reminds the public that all motorists, regardless of whether they drive ATVs or full-size vehicles, can be subject to mandatory alcohol screening when stopped by police."
