ItSA国际影视传媒檚 been a busy year for Fort Smith musician Thrasher Guyuk (Derrick Thrasher) whose two new singles, The Sickness Endless and Catalysts of Construction, hit the airwaves, Aug. 31.
The tracks are a culmination of fast riff-style creation and rock wave inspiration, and Guyuk says he created them to represent something deeper.
SA国际影视传媒淎 lot of the songs that I create are on problems that exist in our world. The [two] biggest ones that I spread as much awareness about is the residential schools that have happened. Both my parents have gone. Like, SA国际影视传媒楾he Sickness EndlessSA国际影视传媒�, not giving anything away is just a continuation of something,SA国际影视传媒� he said.
GuyukSA国际影视传媒檚 second single, Catalysts of Construction focuses on the idea of Indigenous immersion.
SA国际影视传媒淚tSA国际影视传媒檚 crazy that this isnSA国际影视传媒檛 normal yet,SA国际影视传媒� said Guyuk. SA国际影视传媒淚tSA国际影视传媒檚 been about 10 years since ISA国际影视传媒檝e started writing songs about it and itSA国际影视传媒檚 cool seeing it beginning to exist today.SA国际影视传媒�
On top of the singles, Guyuk has two new albums that heSA国际影视传媒檚 excited to release. The first being hopefully around Christmas time, and the second being sometime next year.
GuyukSA国际影视传媒檚 been a musician from the age of 14 playing in different bands, along the way.
SA国际影视传媒淓very single band ISA国际影视传媒檝e been a drummer,SA国际影视传媒� said Guyuk. SA国际影视传媒淚SA国际影视传媒檝e been a guitar player, singer. I also did bass. Right now, ISA国际影视传媒檓 writing dance-pop chill wave music, and ISA国际影视传媒檝e always loved piano, and ISA国际影视传媒檝e always wanted to make 80SA国际影视传媒檚 type music.SA国际影视传媒�
SA国际影视传媒淣ow I started on what I would call my passion project,SA国际影视传媒� said Guyuk. SA国际影视传媒淚 love all the 80SA国际影视传媒檚 stuff, Billy Idol is [the] biggest one. ISA国际影视传媒檝e always wanted to make an album like his.SA国际影视传媒�
Guyuk said he developed his most recent singles one instrument at a time.
SA国际影视传媒淭he way it happened is the creative juices are always flowing,SA国际影视传媒� said Guyuk. SA国际影视传媒淭here are some days where ISA国际影视传媒檒l just suddenly get up and be like ; SA国际影视传媒淵ou know what? ISA国际影视传媒檓 going to hop on the drums right now.SA国际影视传媒� Some days, ISA国际影视传媒檒l just run into a riff. A lot of the times, the music is just stuck in my head, and it just sits there until one day until one day ISA国际影视传媒檓 like; Oh my God.SA国际影视传媒�
SA国际影视传媒淚SA国际影视传媒檒l hop on to the drums, record the drum track,SA国际影视传媒� continued Guyuk. SA国际影视传媒淎 simple drum track just to get the guitars in afterwards. ISA国际影视传媒檒l work on the guitars until I think; SA国际影视传媒淭his is perfect.SA国际影视传媒� Or even close to perfect, nothing is ever perfect.SA国际影视传媒�
Guyuk continues the process with bass and vocals until, during his editing process, he removes and redoes the undesired aspects of what he believes arenSA国际影视传媒檛 perfect for the song.
SA国际影视传媒淚tSA国际影视传媒檚 one of the craziest circles [of song creation] you can think of and ISA国际影视传媒檓 doing this with about 13 songs right now,SA国际影视传媒� said Guyuk. SA国际影视传媒淚 love it, itSA国际影视传媒檚 seriously my life blood. I love creating music. ThereSA国际影视传媒檚 some days where I could wake up at eight in the morning and start on the drums, and then I could continue on until one or two in the morning. Of course ISA国际影视传媒檓 going to stop and make supper, get my children, this and that, but then as soon as that free time comes ISA国际影视传媒檓 sitting on the computer recording another guitar track and such.SA国际影视传媒�
Guyuk has nothing but praise for the the NWT music community.
SA国际影视传媒淚tSA国际影视传媒檚 a cool circle here,SA国际影视传媒� said Guyuk. SA国际影视传媒淚nspiring each other to push further SA国际影视传媒� ISA国际影视传媒檇 love to see so [many] artists reach all of Canada, not just Canada but [all over] and become really popular. Inevitably, that is coming and you can see that a lot of artists are getting much, much more noticeable. One of the biggest ones that I watched recently was The Jerry Cans, I thought that was really cool.SA国际影视传媒�
Guyuk lost his job during the pandemic but said it freed up his time to do what he loves.
SA国际影视传媒淭he first thought I had was; SA国际影视传媒淥h my God, what do I do?SA国际影视传媒�,SA国际影视传媒� he said. SA国际影视传媒淭hen I was like; SA国际影视传媒淚 am sitting on all of my songs that I havenSA国际影视传媒檛 been working on for a year. Not to make work sound negative, but out of nowhere I told myself; SA国际影视传媒榃ork on them. Keep going.SA国际影视传媒� Then my second wind came back, and now ISA国际影视传媒檝e wrote enough songs for about three albums right now. It all depends on your outlook of what you want to do, and thatSA国际影视传媒檚 what ISA国际影视传媒檓 doing right now.SA国际影视传媒�
As for others who have had trouble creating their own pieces due to the emotional weight of the pandemic, Guyuk gave his take on it.
SA国际影视传媒淭hereSA国际影视传媒檚 always that light,SA国际影视传媒� continued Guyuk. SA国际影视传媒淵ou just got to search for it, if you want to. You have want it. You have to want to see all this positivitySA国际影视传媒� if youSA国际影视传媒檙e going to look at it as a darkness, than thatSA国际影视传媒檚 what youSA国际影视传媒檙e going to find no matter what, but if you search for things that, say youSA国际影视传媒檙e going to enjoy or just love doing, and just keep on looking at the positive side. YouSA国际影视传媒檙e going to find that positive side.SA国际影视传媒�
