Inuvik Elder Gerry Kisoun, a stalwart community volunteer, has been named the next commissioner of the NWT.
An announcement was posted to the Prime MinisterSA国际影视传媒檚 website on April 19.

As commissioner, Kisoun will fulfill many of the same duties as a governor general or lieutenant governor would cover elsewhere, including swearing in MLAs and government officials as well as opening and closing legislative sessions. He takes over the mantle from Margaret Thom.
Kisoun served as a member of the for 25 years, when he was stationed in Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk, in addition to stints in Alberta and Yukon.
He also has worked a decorated 17-year career with Parks Canada. He was deputy commissioner from 2011 to 2017.
He was born in the Mackenzie Delta and can be frequently seen around town promoting Inuvialuit and GwichSA国际影视传媒檌n culture, as well as telling stories about the history of the region. He sits on numerous boards and volunteer organizations, including the Northern Games Society and the Muskrat Jamboree.
