Three Edmonton men are facing charges after multiple teams surrounded a Hay River residence following a report of a possible hostage-taking on Jan. 10.
"Police information was that several armed individuals had taken a victim at gunpoint into the residence," the stated in a Jan. 13 news release.
Initially, 10 people were arrested at the home, but seven of them were later released without charges.
Christ Nagateka, 19, is charged with failure to comply with court release order conditions. At the time of his arrest, he was subject to judicial interim release relating to several drug and firearms charges in another jurisdiction, according to the .
Yonis Jama, 26, faces a charge of failing to comply with court undertaking conditions. When he was apprehended, he had warrants for his arrest in both Alberta and the NWT relating to drug and weapons charges, as well as a charge for previously assaulting a police officer in Hay River, the stated.
Leron John, 25, is charged with three counts of failure to comply with court release order conditions. John has previously been charged relating to weapons and drug offences. He was subject to a Canada-wide warrant connected to a shooting in Alberta and a warrant regarding weapons charges within the NWT. He was further subject to court release order conditions prohibiting him from being in the NWT except to attend court.
All three individuals appeared before a justice of the peace and were kept in jail.
"The initial complaint of a hostage-taking has not been substantiated and an investigation into these circumstances is still ongoing," the added.
The Jan. 10 call involved the 's Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services, Crisis Negotiation Team as well as additional general duty resources and other supports.
