After almost 10 years as the NWT's MP,  Liberal Michael McLeod announced July 10 that he will not be seeking another term in the next federal election.

"To the constituents of the Northwest Territories who have elected me for three terms to represent you in the House of Commons: thank you for your trust in me, and know that I did my best to make sure your voices were heard in Parliament," McLeod stated.

In 2015, McLeod beat NDP incumbent Dennis Bevington to win the seat. McLeod added that he'll stay on for the remainder of this government.

"I will be asking our party leadership to begin an open and transparent process to elect a new candidate in advance of the 45th Canadian federal election," said McLeod. "I have decided that it is now the time to cut down on my travel, to spend more time at home here in the North and to focus on my grandchildren, who are now the centre of my universe."

While the MP's Liberal successor has yet to be determined, Kimberly Fairman was chosen to be the Conservative candidate during a nomination race in late June. However, competitor Jackie Jacobson has since filed an appeal over that outcome. Meanwhile, Kelvin Kotchilea will represent the New Democratic Party.
