After a year-and-a-half of public administration through the GNWT, Tsiigehtchic's newly-elected hamlet council was sworn-in on Jan. 15.
It marks the final step in becoming a charter community for its 190 residents.
Hamlet status was granted to Tsiigehtchic on July 1, 2024. This process created a hamlet council and a band council.
"As a hamlet, the authority and operations of the community government are more easily defined and separated," according to the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs. "In addition, this new community status means that all residents are eligible to vote and run for the mayor and councillor positions."
Tsiigehtchic residents petitioned for hamlet status in 2019. A hamlet election held on Dec. 9 resulted in 55 per cent voter turnout.
The community's new municipal leaders are Mayor Shawn James Roland VanLoon and councillors James Andre, Davina Benoit-Cardinal, Charlene Blake, Dinah Blake, Georgie Niditchie, Peter Ross, Shalene Shae and Brian Smith.
