Baffin claims Cup

Baffin defeated the Kivalliq Canucks 3-1 to take the Challenge Cup two games to one in Rankin Inlet this past week.

The series ran from Feb. 20-22 at the Rankin arena.

The Baffin squad had to fight back and take games two and three in the series after dropping the opener 3-1 to the Canucks.

The win gives Baffin the right to represent Nunavut at the Maritime Hockey North Junior 'C' Championship from April 4-8 at the South Shore Actiplex at Crapaud, Prince Edward Island.

The event will pit Baffin against the champions of the Nova Scotia Regional Junior Hockey League, the New Brunswick Junior Hockey League and the Prince Edward Island Junior 'C' Hockey League.

Day rescheduled

Baker Lake

The community of Baker Lake has rescheduled its Baker Lake Minor Hockey Association's Family Fun Day until March.

The event, which features games, fundraising draws and an all-day canteen to support the community's minor hockey players, was originally scheduled for Feb. 24.

The exact date for the Family Fun Day in March has yet to be announced.

Mammal hunting

Kivalliq/Coral Harbour

The Kivalliq Inuit Association will be holding Pijunnaqsiniq (sea-mammal hunting on ice) in Coral Harbour from March 4-10.

The camp is for Inuit males aged 15-29 in the Kivalliq region who are interested in learning traditional Inuit skills from elders while out on the land.

The proposed activities at the camp include land- and sea-mammal harvesting and hunting skills, learning survival skills out on the land, traditional Inuit weather observation, life skills and healing, and sakku and harpoon making.
