Chief Supt. Amanda Jones has assumed the commanding officer role with Nunavut's V Division, replacing Michael Jeffrey, who had served in that capacity since November 2014.
Jones, Nunavut's first female commanding officer, comes to the territory from the NWT, where she was the officer in charge of criminal operations for two years.
As the eighth "top cop" in Nunavut's history, she will be responsible for 185 employees at 25 detachments in the territory.
Jones was born in Montreal, raised in Halifax and joined the in 1992. In addition to the NWT, she has served in British Columbia and completed a nine-month United Nations' mission in Kosovo in 2001.
Jones has a bachelor of arts degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax. She has been awarded the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal, the United Nations Mission in Kosovo medal, The Queens Golden Jubilee medal, The Queens Diamond Jubilee medal, the Long Service medal and the Canadian Forces Decoration.
A formal change of command ceremony is planned for May 1.
