Mumilaaq Qaqqaq of Baker Lake was sworn-in as a member of Parliament on Tuesday.
Then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed his cabinet on Wednesday. Carolyn Bennett, a Toronto MP, returns as minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations. Her department oversees the Inuit-Crown relationship with an aim to "enable Indigenous peoples to build capacity and support their vision of self-determination," according to the Government of Canada.
Dan Vandal was named minister of Northern Affairs while Marc Miller takes over as minister of Indigenous Services.
Vandal hails from Manitoba and served five terms as a city councillor in Winnipeg. He also served as the citySA国际影视传媒檚 deputy mayor. As Northern Affairs minister, he will have a hand in issues such as the effects of climate change, infrastructure, transportation, energy and economic development in CanadaSA国际影视传媒檚 Arctic region.
Miller, who represents a Montreal constituency, is a lawyer who was parliamentary secretary for Crown-Indigenous relations in the previous Liberal government. He will be tasked with addressing housing, education and water quality in Indigenous communities.
