Nunavut MP Mumilaaq Qaqqaq says NDP leader Jagmeet Singh will visit the territory.

Among the numerous items sheSA国际影视传媒檚 been tending to since being elected on Oct. 21, thatSA国际影视传媒檚 one commitment she has secured from the head of the party.

SA国际影视传媒淵es, weSA国际影视传媒檙e working on that,SA国际影视传媒� says Qaqqaq, adding that Singh has been SA国际影视传媒渙pen-mindedSA国际影视传媒� and SA国际影视传媒渟upportive.SA国际影视传媒�

Singh has not only advised her on how to navigate politics in Ottawa, but heSA国际影视传媒檚 listened to what sheSA国际影视传媒檚 had to say, according to Qaqqaq.

SA国际影视传媒淭hatSA国际影视传媒檚 something thatSA国际影视传媒檚 really important to me,SA国际影视传媒� she says. SA国际影视传媒淗eSA国际影视传媒檚 just been really great and so have all the other NDP staff.SA国际影视传媒�

While Qaqqaq says sheSA国际影视传媒檚 eager to tackle the many issues that Nunavummiut need addressed in Ottawa, sheSA国际影视传媒檚 been preoccupied with training, orientation, searching for office space in Iqaluit, figuring out living accommodations in Ottawa, hiring staff and being involved in numerous meetings with organizations and individuals.

SA国际影视传媒淚tSA国际影视传媒檚 been very busy trying to sort those details,SA国际影视传媒� she says, adding that the soon-to-be-hired staff will be able to handle the flood of emails and social media communication she receives, among other tasks.

SA国际影视传媒淚tSA国际影视传媒檚 difficult to be able to do what I want to when I canSA国际影视传媒檛 hit the ground running, and I definitely canSA国际影视传媒檛 hit the ground runningSA国际影视传媒� thereSA国际影视传媒檚 a lot of things for me to take care of first,SA国际影视传媒� Qaqqaq says. SA国际影视传媒淚SA国际影视传媒檓 hoping over the next couple of weeks I can get staffed up so I can start being transparent and open like I was before.SA国际影视传媒�

The Prime MinisterSA国际影视传媒檚 Office has announced that Parliament will be recalled on Dec. 5. In the days following that, Qaqqaq, who recently turned 26, will make her first official statement in the House as an MP.

SA国际影视传媒淚tSA国际影视传媒檚 something ISA国际影视传媒檝e been thinking about. ThereSA国际影视传媒檚 nothing concrete for me yet,SA国际影视传媒� she says of her upcoming premier address in front of her fellow federal politicians.

It wonSA国际影视传媒檛 be her first time orating in Parliament. She did so in March 2017 as part of the Daughters of the Vote program, which fosters aspiring young female political leaders. It was then that she made an emotional speech about suicide in Nunavut and its causes, which went viral on social media.

She was recognized as Trina Qaqqaq at the time, but has since adopted Mumilaaq as her preferred name. ThatSA国际影视传媒檚 a moniker she inherited from her dad when she was just a toddler who liked to dance.

SA国际影视传媒淢umi is dance (in Inuktitut) and laaq is little one. ItSA国际影视传媒檚 just something that makes a lot more sense to me,SA国际影视传媒� she says. SA国际影视传媒淚tSA国际影视传媒檚 reclaiming my culture, reclaiming my language, reclaiming a lot of things that were attempted to be erasedSA国际影视传媒� I think itSA国际影视传媒檚 important that people get to be called whatever they wished to be called. ItSA国际影视传媒檚 important to acknowledge that and appreciate the background and where it comes from when people are ready to share it.SA国际影视传媒�
