Cases of gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted infection, have been climbing in Nunavut, especially in the Kitikmeot region, according to the Department of Health.

Gonorrhea can be avoided through safer sex practices, such as wearing a condom, and being cautious in the number of sexual partners one has.

The infection can be treated with antibiotics. Failing to seek treatment can result chronic pelvic pain in women and infertility in both men and women.

Women with gonorrhea commonly experience pain while urinating or vaginal discharge. A prevalent symptom among men is discharge from the penis.

Even individuals who exhibit no symptoms can still be at risk of complications.
