November 9, 1975 - April 13, 2024
Clifford Tiriaq Peter Carter, 48 years old, passed away on April 13, 2024, at home in Yellowknife surrounded by family. Clifford was diagnosed with terminal cancer in late January 2024. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie (47) and his two children Caleb (25) and Maya (15).
Clifford was born on November 9, 1975, to Teddy and Theresa Carter in Yellowknife, NT. He lived in several communities in the Kitikmeot region and Yellowknife growing up. His family settled in Gjoa Haven and called it home. His father Teddy and his siblings Elizabeth,Wally, Berna, Jimmy, Edna, Andrea, Kayla, and his nieces and nephews will miss their brother and uncle. Clifford was loved by his in-laws, Frederick and Christine. His siblings through marriage; Mary, Dean, Christal, Heather, Carla, Jessica and Napoleon loved him as their older brother and he loved being an uncle to his nieces and nephews.
Clifford graduated from Sir John Franklin High School in 1994. In College, he studied business and management. He enjoyed meeting people and made many lifelong friendships. Clifford went on to university as a Native Studies major. He was interested in community development and wanted to see indigenous people succeed and thrive in their communities.
After College, Clifford worked in Gjoa Haven on community economic development and business administration for the Hamlet of Gjoa Haven. After university, Clifford and his family moved to Deline and he worked with the Deline First Nation and the Land Claim Organization on community development and other special projects. He was happy when his work impacted the community positively.
Clifford and his family moved to Yellowknife in late 2010 and he started his career in mining. He valued the friendships he developed at Snap Lake, Gahcho Kue and in the community organizations he worked with in Gjoa Haven, Deline, and Yellowknife.
Clifford was a family man and he loved spending time at home and travelling with his family. Clifford loved the environment and did his part by recycling and living sustainably. Clifford was good-natured and had a great sense of humour. He joked and made people laugh. He knew life was meant to be enjoyed and not be taken so seriously. He had a swagger, a beautiful smile and a wonderful personality.
His time on Earth was well-lived. He loved his family with all his heart. He was a supporter, protector and provider. He will be missed. Clifford was laid to rest on April 17, 2024, at the Lakeview Cemetery in Yellowknife.
