In loving memory
September 16, 1961 - October 25, 2024
The family of Daniel Harry Smith sadly announces his passing in October of this year. Dan passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Palm Springs.
Born on September 16, 1961, in Toronto, Dan displayed an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age. He began delivering newspapers and, by grade six, proudly carried a cheque book in his shirt pocket. At just 16, he left school and home to seek his fortune, opening his own fish and chips shop in Owen Sound, Ontario.
Never one to rest on his achievements, Dan moved west to Alberta and eventually settled in Inuvik, where he became an Ice Road Trucker long before they gained fame on the History Channel. Over his more than 30 years in Inuvik, Dan became a beloved community member, forming lifelong friendships and leaving a lasting mark with bold endeavours, including organizing a Metallica concert in Tuktoyaktuk.
While Dan achieved notable business success, he is most fondly remembered for his incredible generosity.Whether
hosting a dinner for 15 or organizing a free Blue Rodeo concert for Inuvik residents, his kindness was legendary. Dan
was never afraid to get involved personally, once making over 200 sandwiches and a large pot of chili to donate to a
community event, and at Christmas, ensuring the elders had gifts of candy.
Dan was a mentor and supporter to many.Despite lacking a formal education, he helped numerous people in Canada
and Mexico further their studies.
Dan is survived by his sister, Jen, and brother, Paul, but his memory lives on in the countless friends he made
throughout his life.
Memorial donations can be made to the Inuvik Youth Centre Society or the SPCA. A celebration of life will be held in
Inuvik in spring 2025
