In loving memory
Hilya Hall
September 25, 1930 - November 18, 2024
It is with sadness that the family of Hilya Hall announce her passing on Monday, November 18, 2024 at the age of 94.
Hilya was born in 1930 on a small homestead in Northern Alberta, the 9th of 11 kids. Her Mother was Finnish and her Dad was Sami.
Early life was tough which made her resilient, entering the working world at 15. Jobs included cleaning and cooking in lumber camps and coal mining towns.
In 1953 she was offered a job in Yellowknife at the Giant Mine cafeteria. She met Albert, who was also working at Giant and living in the bunkhouse. A common love for sports, outdoor adventures and partying with friends brought them closer together.
They married later that year and made Yellowknife home, raising four boys in the process in a small house on the lakeshore at Giant. She was active in the community donating countless hours to charities and organizations including the Order of Royal Purple of which she was immensely proud.
They enjoyed retirement in Kelowna for 20 years but moved back "home" to Yellowknife in 2006, Dad's Parkinson's landed him in Aven Cottages. Mom moved into Aven Ridge and helped care for him until he passed away in 2013.
An avid gardener, she had a green thumb, growing beautiful flowers in front of Aven Ridge and on her deck every summer.
We thank her neighbours, friends, and staff at Avens for their caring and support. Mom also spoke very highly of the EMS and the staff at the hospital. Our heartfelt thanks.
Hilya was predeceased by her eldest son Jim and her husband Albert. She is survived by her sister Leila Tomich, sons Ken (Jeannette), Tom (Ann) and Terry (Jackie) and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Donations in Hilya's memory can be made through the Yellowknife Community Foundation to the Albert HallSeniors Enhancement Fund soon to be called the Albert and Hilya Hall Seniors Enhancement Fund.
A Celebration of Life will be held upstairs at the Elks Hall on December 12, 2024, from 3 to 6 p.m. with a family tribute at 4. Refreshments will be provided.
