The survival of Canada is at stake

Michael Miltenberger is a former longtime MLA and cabinet minister residing in Fort Smith.

This year is indeed turning out to be a year like no other.

U.S. President Donald TrumpSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s global economic war and his threats against CanadaSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s sovereignty and very existence continue. With ever-increasing internal chaos and confusion, Trump is forging ahead with the dismantling of the American republic, moving to replace it with an unelected, oligarchy of billionaires.

Never before has Canada faced such a threat to its survival. We are on a war footing. This is not a war in distant lands like the First World War and the Second World War, where Canada went overseas to fight with the Allies against the Axis powers. This threat is here, at home. On our southern flank is an unpredictable, aggressive U.S. president bent on our destruction. Our northern flank in the Arctic is exposed and we struggle within Canada to defend ourselves, as we forge new alliances and come up with plans to retool SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” to up our game SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” while staying united like never before, all in real time.

We are now in a federal election to choose the next prime minister and government to lead Canada. This is not a normal election. The barbarians are literally at the gates. We have to stay focused. We know Canada is at risk. Before all else, this election is first and foremost about one absolutely critical issue: who is best suited to lead Canada through this time of danger and uncertainty so that we come out the other side with our country secure, sovereign and looking to the future. This will not be easy as we watch TrumpSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s wrecking ball politics dismantling democracy in the U.S. We are seeing unprecedented interference by Trump in CanadaSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s affairs. He is not a friend of Canada. He cannot be trusted and has demonstrated this by words and actions. His politics are anathema to most Canadians.

This election is a face-off between Liberal leader Mark Carney and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. Who is best suited to lead us and defend Canada? This election is their job interview, with all Canadian voters on the interview panel. Canadians are very anxious about Canada and very focused on this election. As voters, this is our only shot at having our say. We have to make our vote count. So who are these two gentlemen asking us for our votes?

Carney, born in Fort Smith, went on to get a good education, entered the world of economics, and worked his way up to the highest levels of finance, nationally and internationally. I was NWT Finance minister when Carney became the eighth governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013. The 2008 financial crisis was a particularly difficult time around the world and Carney was at the helm of the Bank of Canada. I saw him in action as we navigated our way through the crisis. His work with the Bank of Canada was instrumental in helping Canada survive the crisis relatively unscathed. He distinguished himself through this and other very difficult financial times in Canada and abroad. We are now in the midst of a global economic war and CanadaSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s future is at risk. As prime minister, 60-year-old Carney has already shown us, because of his reputation, he is able to step on to the international stage, to be welcomed by world leaders as an equal, protecting CanadaSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s interests and forming alliances. He is doing and saying all the right things, which is very reassuring to voters.

Poilievre was born in Calgary. At 45 years old, he has spent most of his adult life SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” 21 years SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” as a member of Parliament in Ottawa. He is a professional politician with little experience outside the House of Parliament. In the midst of a global economic war, needing to defend Canada internationally, is that enough, or the right experience? Plus, you donSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™t just get Poilievre, you get Trump, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith (at best a half-hearted member of Team Canada), and PoilievreSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s staff connections with U.S. Vice-President J.D. VanceSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s office.

Smith has her version of TrumpSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s Project 2025 folks in her office driving Alberta policy. If Poilievre wins, those folks will be in Ottawa the day after the election, trying to emulate what is going on in the U.S.

The survival of our Canada SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” the true north, strong and free SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” is what is at stake. Vote wisely, vote strategically, I will be voting Liberal.
