Extreme cold warnings across Northwest Territories

Nearly the entire Northwest Territories and much of central Canada is under an extreme cold warning.

Only Sachs Harbour and Paulatuk are free of the telltale red marker on the .

The weather agency warns of windchill factors of between -55 and -60 in communities from Ulukhaktok to Wekweeti and Behchoko, Norman Wells and Tulita to Fort Liard and Sa

In Yellowknife the mercury dipped to -44 Saturday.

Factoring in windchill, the temperature is at a frigid -52, with ice fog reducing visibility to just a few hundred metres. At least one weather app pegged the windchill factor at -56 C Saturday morning.

"Hazardous frostbite conditions" are in effect, warns.

Few in the downtown have ventured out into the cold. Those that do leave their vehicles running.

Temperatures are forecast to remain in the -40s all weekend.

Monday will bring some relief, with Environment Canada calling for a low of -32 C.
