The federal government is investing up to $8 million into the GNWT's new Greenhouse Gas Grant Program for Buildings and Industry.

MP Michael McLeod and Minister of Infrastructure Wally Schumann were in Yellowknife today for the funding announcement.

"The new application-based grant program will support projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions from heating, electricity, transportation, and industrial processes," a from the Government of Canada states.

The program aims to lower the cost of energy efficient retrofits like replacing boilers and heating systems.

This is a one-time funding arrangement with Environment and Climate Change Canada, said Schumann.

The program is open to industry and commercial property owners, while organizations like the Arctic Energy Alliance have programs and rebates for retrofitting smaller and residential buildings.

"We'll be accepting applications continuously throughout the year, and there will be four approval periods per year," said Robert Sexton, manager of Energy Policy and Planning with the Department of Infrastructure.

Businesses, individuals and corporations are eligible to receive 25 per cent of their total project costs.

"We will work with any applicants who wish to apply and help with their application," said Sexton.

Once the application is complete, it should be approved in a matter of months.

"Applications will be competitive however so applying doesn't necessarily mean you'll get a grant," he said.
