A weekend's worth of giveaways and special prices marked the official grand opening of the Eskimo Point Lumber Supply Home Hardware store in Rankin Inlet earlier this month.

In addition to Donna and Cyril Kriterdluk's big win, Tommy Gordon won a 22-250 Weatherby rifle, Sheila Schweder took home a brand-new leather sofa couch valued at more than $2,000 and Matt Wilkins won a $500 gift card which he promptly donated to the breakfast program at Leo Ussak Elementary School.
New chair for Nunavut Impact Review Board
Baker Lake
Marjorie Aaviq Kaluraq of Baker Lake has been nominated as the new chair of the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB).
A Nunavut Arctic College instructor with the Nunavut Teacher Education program, Kaluraq has been with the NIRB since 2011, serving most recently as the board's vice-chair.
According to a news release from the NIRB, Kaluraq was selected for her strong leadership potential, her history of community engagement and volunteerism and her interest in public policy and activism as an effective means to positive change on issues facing the North.
Fluent in both Inuktitut and English, Kaluraq received her bachelor of science degree (with honours) in environmental and resources science at Trent University in Peterborough, Ont. and is also currently taking a masters of educational studies program at Trent.
Wise woman honoured
Rankin Inlet
Canada 150 Medal winner Rosemary Sandy of Rankin Inlet has been honoured with the Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council's Wise Woman Award for 2019.
The announcement was made by Nunavut minister responsible for the status of women Elisapie Sheutiapik in Iqaluit on March 12.
Sandy was honoured with the award for her efforts in keeping traditional knowledge of sewing and cooking alive.
