Arrive early for flights this holiday season

As the holiday season approaches, the Department of Infrastructure is reminding travellers to leave ample time to arrive at the airport.

Travellers should arrive at least 90 minutes before their flights during the holiday season, says Kelley Ryder, communications officer for the Department of Infrastructure. Brendan Burke/NNSL photo.

"The holiday season is one of the busiest times of year at Yellowknife Airport," said department spokesperson Kelley Ryder.

The department doesn't anticipate delays through security this holiday season, but is advising travellers to arrive a minimum of 90 minutes ahead of their flight, she said.

Last December, a Yellowknife family missed their flight and connections as a result of delays at the airport, after a security line bottlenecked before an evening WestJet flight, the CBC reported.

The airport has installed several upgrades in the last year, including its new Canadian Air Transport Security Authority screening area.

Yellowknife Airport has three designated parking lots, should the main lot fill up. There is a parking lot on Bristol Ave., directly across the street from Air Tindi and Braden Burry Expediting and street parking along Bristol Ave.

Travellers should "pack a smile" for those traveling with children and seniors, said Ryder.

"At Yellowknife Airport, all of our employees wish you, your family and friends a safe and happy holiday season!" she said.
