Avens: A Community for Seniors got a $10,000 grant from the 100 Men Who Give A Damn Yellowknife organization late Thursday.
The seniors facility was among community organizations seeking financial support for projects during its latest round of collaborative funding commitments.
Daryl Dolynny, CEO of Avens Manor, provide pitching the idea of funding senior involvement in a food co-operative taking place this growing season.
"This is the first time in a seniors home and across Canada that we have never seen this done before where seniors are able to come and help grow their own food," he explained. "We're going to help with social isolation, we're going to help with our schools, and we're also working with places like Ecology North."
Dolynny provides a brief tour during the video, showing off uniquely made garden beds that allow for wheelchairs and walkers to enter. He showed, with the assistance of Max Carpentier, director of operations at Avens, how even an able-bodied person using a wheelchair can have difficulty going over gravel ground to reach the garden plots.
