The Yellowknife post office is getting a makeover.

"Modernization of the buildingSA国际影视传媒檚 architectural elements and mechanical and electrical systems were required," reads the company's July 24 news release.
The post office is on Chief Drygeese territory, the news release states. So, 6133 is also adding a canvass that reflects the areaSA国际影视传媒檚 Indigenous culture and history, specifically the Yellowknives Dene First Nation.
In May 2023, the company held workshops with Indigenous Elders and Tlicho artist James Wedzin, and that gave direction to the makeover.
"The workshops provided an abundance of information on the history of the Yellowknives Dene, and inspiration for the design elements that were chosen," according to 6133 NWT Ltd.
There is now a life-size rendering of the late Yellowknives Dene member Michel Paper adorning the exterior of the building. Paper delivered mail for Canada Post by dog team.
The building will also be decorated with traditional Dene flowers and moosehide.
"A naming ceremony is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 17, 2024, when all the artwork is fully installed around the building. The building will be called 'Akaitcho Post' at the recommendation of Chief Fred Sangris," the release adds.
