Step one of the road toward the Canada Winter Games for the NWT's girls hockey team has been a successful one.
The girls came out on top in the Midget 1-B division of the Wickenheiser World Female Hockey Festival in Calgary on Sunday thanks to a 4-1 win over the Saskatoon Comet Legends in the gold medal game.
The round-robin saw the CWG girls finish with a record of three wins and one tie, the draw coming against the Legends while the victories came against Siksika Minor Hockey from Alberta (19-0), the Montana Big Sky Wildcats (5-1) and the Kelvin Clippers from Winnipeg (4-3).
Inuvik's Leesha Setzer opened the scoring for the CWG girls in the final and Sarah Fleming of Yellowknife added a second before the first period was out, which turned out to be the game winner. Abby Webster added a pair of goals in the second and third periods respectively to salt the game away and secure the banner.
Inuvik's Kyra McDonald led the team and the division itself in scoring with seven goals and five assists. In fact, the NWT had the top five scorers overall in the division.
