The collective agreement governing municipal workers expires at the end of 2018. In a letter to the city Monday, the Union of Northern Workers (UNW) gave the city notice they are ready to engage in collective bargaining.
Local members have submitted their bargaining proposals to the UNW local bargaining committee and chosen a bargaining team.
With no dates scheduled, it is unlikely the union and employer will get through negotiations before the end of the year, said UNW president Todd Parsons.
Under the Canada Labour Code, both parties must engage in collective bargaining within the next three months.
