Was Serenus Bryan a trusted peddler of powerful narcotics working under the watchful eye of convicted kingpin Todd Dube, or an addict who'd say anything SA国际影视传媒 including lying about selling drugs SA国际影视传媒 to get her next fix?
The answer to that question SA国际影视传媒 the crux of a three-day trial in NWT Supreme Court SA国际影视传媒 now rests in the hands of 11 jurors who will decide the fate of the 51-year-old Yellowknife woman charged with trafficking cocaine and fentanyl.
Bryan was one of nine people arrested in September 2016 as part of Project Green Manalishi SA国际影视传媒 a far-reaching G Division-led investigation into high-level drug trafficking in Yellowknife and the territory.
Unlike many of the suspects arrested in the sweeping probe, police and prosecutors never tied any physical drugs to Bryan.
Instead, the Crown's case against Bryan was based on a statement she gave to police a day after her arrest, the opinion of a drug trafficking expert, and 25 intercepted communications SA国际影视传媒 three text messages and 22 phone calls.
The wiretapped calls, played aloud in court to jurors earlier this week, were recorded by between late February and late March 2016. Through an agreed statement of facts, the Crown established that on many of the intercepted calls, both Todd Dube and Michael Lapierre SA国际影视传媒 also arrested in Green Manalishi SA国际影视传媒 can be heard speaking.
After being convicted of conspiring to traffic fentanyl, cocaine and other drugs, Dube was sentenced to nine years in prison for leading a sophisticated drug network in Yellowknife. Lapierre received a 2.5 year sentence for trafficking.
All of the intercepted phone calls featured a woman speaking with both Dube and Lapierre on multiple occasions.
Both the Crown and Bryan's lawyer, Steve Smith, say voice belongs to her but disagree on the woman's level of involvement.
Intercepted calls
In calls between Dube and Bryan, discussions often focused on money SA国际影视传媒 and money owed to Dube by Bryan.
In one call, Dube can be heard asking, SA国际影视传媒渉ow much do you have for me? SA国际影视传媒 please donSA国际影视传媒檛 tell me itSA国际影视传媒檚 only a couple hundred SA国际影视传媒 ISA国际影视传媒檓 going to come see you.SA国际影视传媒
On Wednesday, Cpl. Len Larson, an drug trafficking expert, testified he believed the woman was trafficking cocaine and fentanyl after reviewing the intercepts.
SA国际影视传媒淪he's an independent contractor in a sense,SA国际影视传媒 said Crown prosecutor Duane Praught during closing arguments Thursday, adding Bryan played a peripheral but important role within Dube's drug ring.
Bryan, Praught argued, was fronted SA国际影视传媒 an agreement that requires a trusting and ongoing relationship -- cocaine and fentanyl from Dube and Lapierre, who would collect owed profits in return.
SA国际影视传媒淪he was trafficking at least some. Was she using? Probably. Was she selling? Yes,SA国际影视传媒 said Praught.
But Bryan's lawyer painted a starkly different portrait of his client's involvement in Yellowknfe's drug world. Smith said she may have been telling Dube and Lapiere she was selling drugs but there is no evidence his client actually did that.
At the time of her arrest, Smith said Bryan was an addict and liar who SA国际影视传媒渨ould say anything to get more drugs.SA国际影视传媒
He suggested his client was lying to Dube in order to purchase more cocaine, citing Larson's own testimony that a dealer is less likely to front someone drugs if they know they're consuming them as well. She was a user SA国际影视传媒 not a trafficker, Smith contended.
The jury was sequestered mid-day Thursday and were still deliberating at press time.
