The wildfire near Edzo is now less of a risk, but it remains out of control, according to NWT Fire.

"The risk is lower today than yesterday that this wildfire impacts Behchoko at Edzo within the next 48 hours," according to the NWT Fire's Wednesday update on the situation. "However, risks have not entirely settled, and the situation could change quickly."

The blaze hasn't grown much, the news release noted. It's expanded by about 30 hectares in a day, to 230 hectares. 

Still, residents nearby are not in the clear yet.

"Winds from the west this afternoon may cause significant fire activity by this afternoon, though [it] should push the fire into the shores of Marian Lake," the update reads.

Those winds could get up to 30 km an hour and gusts could reach up to 50 km an hour, according to NWT Fire.

"This could cause significant fire activity today."

Behchoko is expected to get about 2 mm of rain overnight, NWT Fire states in its report. "The extra moisture will be helpful in keeping fire activity lower than it could have been today."

That rain relief, however, is likely to dry out quickly, the agency adds. Officials expect the area to return to dryer conditions, which would support significant fire activity by this evening.

Edzo is also still under an evacuation notice. The wildfire is still about 17 km away and was caused by lightning. 

The key objective today for NWT Fire is to support perimeter suppression and containment. A helicopter is making strategic bucket drops on the fire.
