In the legislative assembly today, Robert C. McLeod, deputy premier and MLA for Inuvik Twin Lakes announced he will not put his name forward in the upcoming October election.
McLeod thanked all members for their work, despite their political disagreements over the years.
"The common denominator that I know we all have is trying to make things good for the people of the Northwest Territories," said McLeod.
"We go about it different ways, sure. But at the end of the day, that's our common denominator."
McLeod called the legislative assembly a "very important institution" and said he felt privileged to have traveled across the Northwest Territories during his time in office.
"I got to meet a lot of folks, there's a lot of good people out there," he said.
"A lot of good, young leaders out there that should be encouraged to come in here."
McLeod was first elected in 2004 and at the end of this assembly he will have served 15 years in the territorial legislature.
"I think Inuvik deserves new energy," said McLeod.
"And I know for a fact there's a lot of good folks in the community that would like to come down here and I think they'll bring value to this institution. And I respect that."
McLeod thanked his supporters as well as his family, who were present in the visitor's gallery for their support and patience.
"Family is very important, you can never do this without the support of your family," he said.
McLeod is currently the Minister of Finance, The Minister of Environment and Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Northwest Territories Power Corporation and he will remain on cabinet until October 23, 2019.
"I will be member for Inuvik Twin Lakes until September 1, and I will conduct myself accordingly," said McLeod.
McLeod said he plans to spend his remaining time with family, including his six grandchildren.
"As much as I like you guys, some of you, I don't want to spend it with you," McLeod said.
"I don't know what lies behind the door for me on October second, but I'll have six grandchildren in tow and I'm excited as heck."
