SPORTS CHECK: Futsal coach returns

The head coach of Canada's men's national futsal team is coming back to town for a second straight year to work with NWT Soccer.

Kyt Selaidopoulos will begin a full weekend of work on coaching and development and it begins tomorrow evening at Weledeh Catholic School with futsal coaching sessions beginning at 6 p.m. He'll then lead a men's identification camp at Weledeh on Friday and Saturday evenings with both nights starting at 7 p.m.

He'll wrap up his time by working with the regional futsal development camp for the Yellowknife region at Weledeh which starts on Saturday. The camp is open to boys and girls players born between 2003 and 2008.

KidSport NWT hands out money

Several groups around the NWT have been given a helping hand from KidSport NWT to help with their programming.

Kendra Wambold, the organization's co-ordinator, announced a total of $33,500 in grant money has been given out through the Community Equipment Grant Program. According to KidSport NWT, the program helps increase participation in sport programs by helping offset the cost of equipment.

The Yellowknife-based programs which received grants were the Yellowknife Curling Centre for its junior program, the NWT Futsal League to help with its inaugural season that kicks off next month and the Yellowknife Wado Kai Karate Club.

Wambold said this was one of the largest grant offerings ever and it's due in part to the Monster Bingo, which KidSport NWT won the chance to host at the Multiplex this past June.

The amounts of the grants range between $500 and $2,000 and Wambold said the cheques were mailed out on Oct. 10.

It's broomball time

The Yk Broomball Association's 2018-2019 season is now underway.

The ball dropped on the mixed league on Oct. 10 with a doubleheader at the Yk Community Arena. The second league night took place this past Sunday and continues tonight with two more games.

The women's league will get going tomorrow evening at the Yk Community Arena with the Larga Clubbers taking on Nuna Logistics Nunatics at 9 p.m.
