The City of Yellowknife will raise the transgender flag in celebration of Transgender Awareness Week.

The flag raising starts at 11 a.m. on Nov. 19 outside City Hall.

The trans pride flag was designed in 1999 by Monica Helms, a transgender American woman.

It was first flown at a Phoenix, Arizona pride celebration the following year.

The Rainbow Coalition of Yellowknife is inviting people to celebrate history and learn about events they are hosting from Nov. 19 to Nov. 25 to celebrate Transgender Awareness Week.

The week is dedicated to raising the visibility of transgender and gender non-conforming people.

The Rainbow Coalition will host several events throughout the week, including workshops on parenting, gender expression workshops and a screening of Stonewall on Nov. 22.

Every year, Nov. 20 marks Transgender Day of Remembrance, honouring the lives lost in acts of transphobic violence.

The coalition will host its own Trans Day of Remembrance Vigil on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m.

The coalition has a full schedule of events on its Facebook page.
