Yellowknife arrested two drivers who were suspected to be impaired by drugs this week.

On July 8, an officer saw a vehicle allegedly speed through two school zones in downtown Yellowknife.

"The driver was stopped and clear signs of impairment were observed. standardized field sobriety tests were administered to the driver, who failed and was subsequently arrested. A drug recognition expert performed an evaluation on the driver, who was later released," the 's July 10 news release reads.

Two days later, Yellowknife said they received a report of a driver who appeared to be falling asleep and was suspected to be impaired.

"Officers made contact with the driver, who was given and failed standardized field sobriety tests."

That driver was arrested and underwent examination from a drug recognition expert, according to . The driver was later released.

Both instances are still under investigation, no charges have been laid yet, the noted.

"Impaired driving remains a leading criminal cause of death in Canada. Many drug-impaired (especially cannabis-impaired) drivers believe they are sober and capable of driving, underestimating the impact of drugs on their motor skills and reactions times," stated in their news release.
