Tom Gross will give a presentation on the Franklin Expedition at the Hay River Heritage Centre on Sept. 14, beginning at 7 p.m.
Gross has been searching for Franklin's grave every summer for the past two decades, taking a quad trek from Gjoa Haven in Nunavut to a spot that he's mapped out on the land.
The Hay River resident will be giving a presentation on the findings from his 2018 trip.
Fossil talk and hunt this week
Bruce Green will be offering a fossil talk and fossil hunt this week.
The fossil talk will take place on Sept. 12 from 7-9 p.m. at NWT Centennial Library.
The fossil hunt will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sept. 15. Participants will meet at the library and drive together to a fossil site. Outdoor clothing and footwear are a must.
All ages are welcome.
Fewer forest fires in NWT this year
In a Sept. 5 news release, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources reported that the NWT experienced a lower than average fire season in 2018.
As of Aug. 22, there were 54 fires with a total of 11,271 hectares burnt. The 25-year average is 172 fires and 402,976 hectares burnt.
Cookbook club being organized
A planning meeting for a cookbook club will be held on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Whispering Willows seniors housing complex.
Each month, members will choose a variety of recipes from a different cookbook and prepare a dish at home to bring to a club potluck.
Jean Marie airport to temporarily close
The Jean Marie River Airport will be closed temporarily in order to accommodate the resurfacing of the runway.
