Beer still dominates Nunavut alcohol sales

$21.7 million in total liquor sales in the 2023-24 leads to 20 per cent profit loss for GN

The Nunavut Liquor and Cannabis Commission (NULC) reported $21.7 million in total liquor sales in 2023-24.

This resulted in a profit of $5.6 million, money which was subsequently transferred to the Government of Nunavut for support programs and services. This also represents a profit decrease of approximately 20 per cent from the year before SA国际影视传媒渄ue in part to the lower volume and investments in our infrastructure to improve operational performance,SA国际影视传媒 according to the annual report released by the NULC. A further $214,000 was spent on social responsibility campaigns for safe consumption.

Sales by product

A significant change last year was the surge by 43 per cent of the sale of coolers and cider, for a total of $3.7 million. Otherwise, there were no notable changes. Beer still represents the majority share of the territory's liquor market, despite dropping by seven per cent, taking in $12.5 million in the 2023-24 year SA国际影视传媒攔epresenting 59.6 per cent of liquor sales. Wine consumption fell by five per cent to 13.9 per cent of all alcohol purchases while spirits rose by five per cent to 8.9 per cent of the total.

Sales by geography

Of the total sales, $17.2 million, or 79 per cent, occurred in Iqaluit. However, the GN's intent to scale back alcohol purchases in Rankin Inlet appeared to be successful.

SA国际影视传媒淭he Department of Finance and NULCSA国际影视传媒檚 commitment to responsible consumption resulted in the daily purchase limits in the Rankin Inlet store being reduced by 50 per cent for the population of Rankin Inlet and the introduction of a cap on import permit quantities,SA国际影视传媒 the report states.

The Iqaluit Beer and Wine Store comprised 62 per cent of NULC liquor sales revenues in 2023-24 while the Rankin Inlet store generated 17 per cent. The remaining 21 per cent was split between licensees (eight per cent) and community orders (13 per cent).

Cannabis control

There are two privately-owned and licensed cannabis stores operating in Iqaluit, both offering shipping to all Nunavut communities. The NULC discontinued its agency agreements in 2023-24 in order to support the locally-owned businesses.
