The Hay River Golf Club is set for a major upgrade thanks to a $565,000 investment from the federal government's Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor).
The substantial investment was announced by Northwest Territories MP Michael McLeod and Hay River Mayor Kandis Jameson at a Feb. 13 news conference in the community.
"With the pending upgrades to the Hay River golf course, we are poised to establish our reputation as the premier golf, camping and event destination in the Northwest Territories," Jameson said. "Tourism plays a crucial role in diversifying Hay RiverSA国际影视传媒檚 economy and brings valuable business to our outfitters, retailers and service providers, strengthening our community and enriching the lives of its residents."
Hay River already welcomes thousands of visitors each year, according to the mayor, and the community is "committed to continuing to enhance tourism and increasing visitation." Upgrading the golf course, which has "significant tourism potential," is expected to help meet that goal, Jameson added.
In terms of specifics, the money will be used to replace the club's greens, as well as its adjoining campground and its clubhouse.
The clubhouse, which McLeod stated is "frequently used by non-profit organizations," will receive new infrastructure such as catering and audio visual equipment.
"By supporting that expansion and supporting that important community infrastructure, weSA国际影视传媒檙e helping to improve a critical piece of infrastructure for Hay River residents to gather, meet, play and come together as neighbours," the MP said.
The hope is that when the upgrades are complete, visitors will to Hay River will "turn a round of golf into a weekend of activities while also enjoying the many events we host at the course," Jameson added.
McLeod, who forecasts "significant public growth" for Hay River in the coming years, also pledged that the town will "contract local businesses to complete this work and further the local economy."
