Fire crews focus on four major blazes in NWT

The next few days are expected to be rough ones for fire crews around the territory. Four fires burning near communities are what firefighters will be focusing on in the coming days, according to the Saturday update from NWT Fire.

Crews are expected to be busy over the next few days battling four fires that grew over the past 24 hours, according to NWT Fire.

Four fires burning near communities are what firefighters will be focusing on in the coming days, according to the Saturday update from NWT Fire. In the North Slave, the fire known as ZF019 grew overnight Saturday, but is still no threat to any property, infrastructure of the community itself.

Wildfire information officer Amy Kennedy stated that crews were monitoring the situation and were working on a containment plan.

In the South Slave, SS048 is burning 34 km west of Kakisa on the west side of Kakisa Lake. Kennedy stated that flames spread north overnight towards Highway 1 at kilometre 230-260.

Crews were working to set up sprinklers on cabins, highway, fibre lines, and other valuables that could be at risk, but the community is not currently at risk. Crews are monitoring closely and working on containment plans, added Kennedy.

In the Dehcho, FS010, which sits 20 km south of Wrigley on the west side of Mackenzie River, grew to the north again due to strong southerly winds.

Kennedy stated that crews were monitoring its growth closely and a values protection crew would be working on critical infrastructure along the river as well on containment plans. Wrigley itself is not currently at risk but heavy smoke is expected on Highway 1 and in the community.

As for FS004 near kilometre 298 on Highway 1, the visible smoke that had been reported by travellers was just unburned fuel burning off well within the fireSA国际影视传媒檚 perimeter and there was no cause for concern other than the heavy smoke and low visibility.

In the Sahtu, fires VQ10 and VQ11both located about 35 km south and west of Deline, have grown north due to strong southerly winds overnight Saturday. Crews were working to set up sprinklers on cabins in the area, but the community is not currently at risk.

Kennedy stated that crews were monitoring closely and working on containment plans.
