Thick black plumes of smoke were visible above Iqaluit's Tundra Ridge at about seven p.m. on Thursday August 1, 2024.

"I looked up, and I thought 'yeah, this is not a barbeque,'" said Diana Janosik-Wronski, who spotted the fire from a 4100 building apartment across Imiqtarviminiq Lake.

What sounded like several explosions were also heard coming from the direction of the smoke.

Emergency services arrived on scene quickly in what looked to be the vicinity of Lago Land, and smoke was contained by about 7:20 p.m.

As of 7:50 p.m., no information regarding the blaze has been released via official channels from the City of Iqaluit communications.
