Mayor Rebecca Alty not planning on federal run ... at least for now

Her Worship says she's been hearing rumours around town about throwing her hat into race for NWT seat

Mayor Rebecca Alty has called rumours of her running for the Liberals in the next federal election just that: rumours.

Mayor Rebecca Alty said she's been hearing a rumour around town that she might the next Liberal candidate when the federal election is called.

But she said it's just that: a rumour.

"Lots to think about, but right now, (I'm) just mayor," said Her Worship.

Alty said she's always thinking about the different options her career might lead to, adding that she found out about the rumour thanks to a few text messages from different people.

"We'll see what life holds," Alty said. "But nothing yet."

The current MP for the NWT, Michael McLeod, announced back in July that he wouldn't seek a fourth term in office.

Any news about who is going to replace him as the next candidate has been slim at best. David Monroe, chair of the NWT Liberals, told SA国际影视传媒 earlier this month at least five people have so far expressed interest in being the next candidate

"I hear names," Alty said about the mysterious others. "I'll let those people talk. Nobody's talked to me about it."

Two candidates have already been confirmed for when the writ drops, whenever that may be. Kimberly Fairman won the nomination race for the Conservatives, while Kelvin Kotchilea was announced as the candidate for the NDP earlier this year.

Alty said she's spoken to both of them in passing.

Alty is currently serving her second term as mayor having been acclaimed in October 2022.

What interests her in politics and government, she said, was what it has to offer at every level.

"At the federal level it's the opportunity with the funding to be able to address mental health, addictions, housing. At the territorial level, it's similar problems and at the city level, it's the work we do when it comes to infrastructure," Alty said.
