The federal government has reached an agreement with both the Fort Simpson M茅tis Nation and Jean Marie River First Nation to help funding the construction of 52 housing units over the next three years.
NWT MP Michael McLeod announced the news on Friday as both communities will receive a total of $1.5 million through the Housing Accelerator Fund.
"Indigenous governments in the Northwest Territories are well aware of the housing needs of their members," stated McLeod in the release. "Initiatives led by communities will remove existing barriers to the construction of homes. The Fort Simpson Metis Nation is slated to get $580,000 to help build eight units over the next three years, while Jean Marie River will get $885,000 to help construct 15 units over the next three years.
The number of units both the Fort Simpson Metis Nation and the Jean Marie River First Nation are project to add over the next decade are 20 and 32 respectively.

It's important to note that the funding will not go toward the direct building of housing units, but rather to help get rid of the red tape that could hold up construction of housing units.
