A 20-year-old Alberta man who has already served time for drug-related offences in Fort Resolution has been picked up again by Hay River .
According to police, officers received a tip that someone known in the drug trade was travelling in the area of the town. Police conducted a traffic stop on April 3 on Highway 1 on a vehicle in question and found the suspect. He was arrested and a search of the vehicle turned up nearly $3,000 in cash that police believe are the proceeds of crime.
As a result, Abel Leule of Edmonton was charged with possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and failure to comply with release order conditions. Those conditions included Leule not allowed to be in the NWT for three years while serving probation following his release from jail in August 2024.
Most of Leule's previous sentence was served while he was remanded in custody, stated on Monday.
Police also stated that Leule was out on bail for other matters and was to remain at his residence 24 hours a day.
Leule was charged back in 2023 after arrested him at a home in Fort Resolution where he allegedly had 84 grams of crack-cocaine, 35 grams of suspected Percocet and $5,500 dollars in cash on him. In that instance, an Elder had called police and asked that Leule be removed from his home. He was also charged with being unlawfully in a dwelling house, obstructing a police officer and two counts of failing to comply with court conditions.
In this latest case, Leule appeared before a Justice of the Peace and has been remanded with a court appearance coming up in the future.
