Following a $100,000 revitalization process, Music NWT is looking to expand into the world of northern music post-Covid.

SA国际影视传媒淢usic NWT, this past year, has gone through some huge growth,SA国际影视传媒� said Trevor Sinclair, president of the organization. SA国际影视传媒淲hen I joined two-and-a-half years ago, we had one grant for $10,000 SA国际影视传媒� we had otherwise lost all our previous funding.

SA国际影视传媒淭his past year, we managed to grow that funding to $110,000, which meant we got to do a lot more,SA国际影视传媒� he said.

The new funding comes from organizations like the Songwriters Association, the Government of the Northwest Territories and FACTOR.

SA国际影视传媒淥ur primary funder is FACTOR,SA国际影视传媒� said Sinclair. SA国际影视传媒淔actor is the organization that funds a lot of musicians for recording. They give us $40,000 every year as they do every Music Industry Association across Canada.SA国际影视传媒�

Music NWT launched a new website on March 25, which marks a significant milestone for the organization as Sinclair said that its strongest community SA国际影视传媒渋s the online community.SA国际影视传媒�

SA国际影视传媒淚t provides greater access to artists that are particularly in the smaller, remote communities,SA国际影视传媒� he said. SA国际影视传媒淚 can tell you just over the weekend (March 26 t0 27), we already had 400 people visit our website and ISA国际影视传媒檝e already received written inquiries into how Music NWT can support artists. So thatSA国际影视传媒檚 huge.SA国际影视传媒�

The site features areas where users can highlight and share their music with other artists.

As well, thereSA国际影视传媒檚 a plan for the website to allow the public to purchase tickets for events.

SA国际影视传媒淭hen that way, those commission fees remain in the NWT and ultimately go to support our artists and the music industry,SA国际影视传媒� said Sinclair.

Other opportunities that have not yet come to fruition are items like Music NWTSA国际影视传媒檚 playlist project and a first-ever NWT Music Awards.

SA国际影视传媒淲hen I walk through a lot of businesses in this town, theySA国际影视传媒檙e playing local radios and stuff, but a lot of those radio stations donSA国际影视传媒檛 cover a lot of NWT artists,SA国际影视传媒� Sinclair said with regards the playlist project. SA国际影视传媒淪o weSA国际影视传媒檝e built a few playlists that weSA国际影视传媒檙e going to be sending around to businesses, encouraging (them) to play these playlists that are just filled with all our NWT artists.

SA国际影视传媒淭his way our NWT artists get paid,SA国际影视传媒� he added. SA国际影视传媒淚f you get airtime, whether itSA国际影视传媒檚 through streaming or through traditional radio, that is payment for an artist.SA国际影视传媒�

As well, an NWT Music Awards gala appears to be on the horizon.

SA国际影视传媒淲eSA国际影视传媒檝e never honored our own musicians. So this fall, we are planning on the first-ever NWT Music Awards and gala,SA国际影视传媒� he said. SA国际影视传媒淲e want a proper dress-up gala. We will showcase a number of artists, weSA国际影视传媒檙e just sort of deciding that in the next month here and weSA国际影视传媒檒l be putting out a call out for showcasing artists and for award nominations as well.SA国际影视传媒�

The awards show and gala is tentatively set for Sept. 10, 2022.
