NEWS BRIEFS: Father Bernie dies at age 80

Rev. Bernard (Bernie) Black, who once served as the parish priest at Our Lady of Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Hay River, died on Sept. 22.

He was 80.

Black SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½“ known as Father Bernie SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½“ died in Kitchener, Ont.

His passing was announced with "great sadness" by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary.

Black served in Hay River until 2010 when he relocated to Yellowknife to become the assistant priest at St. Patrick's Parish.

In his time in the North, he also served the Hay River Reserve, Fort Smith and Fort Resolution.

Black was a priest for over 50 years, having been ordained in 1966.

 

Family Support Centre sets AGM

The Family Support Centre will hold its annual general meeting on Sept. 26, beginning at 7 p.m. at NWT Centennial Library.

Since 1989, the Family Support Centre has operated a women's shelter in Hay River.

On Sept. 15, it demolished an old building which once housed a women's shelter on Riverview Drive.

The goal is to start construction on a new building in the spring of 2019.

Fundraising is underway to find about $3 million for that project.

The Family Support Centre is currently operating its women's shelter in a house owned by the Town of Hay River.

 

Contract awarded to pave parking lot

The Town of Hay River has awarded a contract to pave the back parking lot and side area at the Rec Centre.

The contract SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½“ at about $280,000 SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½“ went to Rowe's Construction on Sept. 17.

At a Sept. 11 special meeting, town council approved up to $300,000 for the project.

Asphalt for the back parking lot and side area was not included in the contract pricing when the Rec Centre was rebuilt.

 

Public hearings on GNWT ombudsman

The Legislative Assembly's Standing Committee on Government Operations will hold public hearings on the idea of a territorial ombudsman.

In a Sept. 21 news release, hearings were announced for a number of communities, including Hay River.

The hearing in Hay River will begin at 6 p.m. on Oct. 1, although the location has yet to be announced.

Other hearings were announced for Fort Resolution, Inuvik, Norman Wells and Behchoko.
