The City of Yellowknife proposed a 1.44 per cent increase on property taxes during the first 2019 draft budget presentation.

City administration proposed the $80-million budget Monday afternoon in front of a newly sworn-in council. That council will examine the budget line by line before voting to adopt the budget on Dec. 10.

The tax increase would see a $22 annual increase on homes valued at $250,000 and a $57 annual increase on homes valued at $650,000. The proposed tax is smaller than the 1.86 per cent increase the city accepted in 2018. In 2016 and 2017 the city had no tax increases.

The proposed budget outlined a number of capital projects, with the proposed aquatic center and replacing the city's main water line being the two largest proposed projects.

The full proposed budget can be found on the city's website. The public will be able to have their say on Nov. 19 when council will field public presentations.
