An online relief campaign for a young Yellowknife family displaced by a house fire last week has raised thousands, surpassing its $5,000 goal.

Donors have pitched in more than $5, 400 to a GoFundMe campaign, "Lindsay and Russell's fire relief fund," in just five days.

The couple, who have a young child, "lost everything," after a blaze ripped through their Larocque Crescent home just after the noon hour on April 23, according to the campaign organizer.

The organizer, a friend of the family, launched the page last Wednesday, calling on residents to dig into their pockets to help cover "everything from clothes and toothpaste," to rent money for at an interim residence for the family forced from their home.

No one was injured in the fire.

"Luckily Lindsay got out in time, with the dogs, but they lost all of their possessions," writes the GoFundMe creator, a family friend.

"... In the mean time they need to rebuild their lives during this traumatic time. I am hoping we can raise some funds to help them get back on their feet quickly," states the campaign organizer.

The territory's fire marshal continues to investigate the cause of the fire, which is believed to have started on a deck attached to the residence.
