The homeless encampment by Aspen Apartments was struck by fire on Monday morning.
Russell Hamilton and Tony Tobac, a couple still living at the encampment, said they were woken up and alerted to the fire by a shouting neighbour in the early hours of the morning.
Although what exactly caused the fire remains a mystery, Hamilton said they're both physically fine and didn't lose anything of serious value.
What looks to be lost, or rather burnt and melted, was in a tent belonging to someone else, Hamilton added.
It seems the encampment won't be going away any time soon and for the few left, it's going to become a lot colder. Temperatures this week are forecast to drop below -20 C and it's been more than two months since the place has had any power.
Toyeke Adedipe, senior communications officer with the Department of Finance, told SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½ previously that the GNWT shut off power to the encampment on Sept. 11. Residents have been noting how cold nights have been since.
SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½ has reached out to both the city and the Fire Marshall for comment and more information about the cause and the investigation.
Jay Boast with the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs, which oversees the Office of the Fire Marshal, said on Monday afternoon that the city responded to the fire and that the fire marshal will not be investigating.
