The Delorey family has been busy on the pebbled ice in recent months with Betti Delorey just missing out on the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in January, while her husband, D'arcy Delorey, got the chance to play in the Montana's Brier earlier this month.
They'll team up together to play in another national championship this coming November.
Team Delorey won the 2025 NWT Mixed Curling Championship at the Hay River Curling Club on Saturday after beating Wyatt Scheller's rink by a score of 6-5. The win gave Team Delorey three straight wins in the best-of-five series to determine who would represent the territory at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship in Assiniboia, Sask., in November.
"They certainly showed up for that last game," said Betti Delorey about Scheller's rink. "It was a good, close game and they weren't willing to walk away and give up the fight"
The original draw saw three teams register to play, all from Hay River, in a double round-robin, meaning each team would get four games each with the top two moving on to the final. One team had to drop out after the first draw, though, because of injuries and that meant the format switch to the best-of-five with just two teams remaining.
"We played out first game against that team, so that didn't count in the standings," said Betti Delorey.
The first game in the new format on March 14 saw Delorey beat Scheller, 10-2, with game two also going Delorey's way the following morning, 9-2.
In the third game, Scheller scored a single with last rock in the first end to draw first blood. After a blank in the second, Delorey put up three in the third to go out in front, 3-1. Both team traded singles in ends four through six before Scheller stole a pair in the seventh to retake the lead, 5-4. Delorey, though, had the hammer coming home in the eighth end and got the deuce she needed to emerge victorious and win it all.
Being up two games gave Delorey a cushion, but she said there's always the danger of the opposing team throwing everything at them to try and stay alive.
"Getting the early win gave us confidence and you get that momentum," she said. "You build off of that and stay on the upswing, but you can always give it up if you take the foot off of the gas. It's good knowing you have three lives and and having a 2-0 lead in games gives you that confidence."
This is a title that the Delorey squad has been chasing for a while, she added, and she knows the curling will be just as good as any she's ever played.
There's also the small detail of the NWT's reputation at the mixed nationals in recent years courtesy of Jamie Koe and his years at the helm. The territory has been a perennial contender for the better part of the last decade and that's not lost on Delorey.
"The previous team has done really well and we want to continue that," she said. "Our goal is to be a contender and be in the battle all the way through. Any time you put on that NWT jacket, there's a responsibility to do well and we know that."
